49 Black Sand Beach
Just a short walk, bike, or drive, away from the Mauna Lani Luxury Resort is 49 Black Sand Beach. This unique beach, also known as Honokaope Beach, features sand composed primarily of fine grains of lava, creating its distinctive black color. This sand is the result of a century old lava flow from Mauna Loa.
This beach is a great alternative to the Mauna Lani Beach Club as the cove creates calm waters, perfect for the whole family. The beach is known for its crystal clear waters, providing excellent conditions for snorkeling, especially near the rocks on either side of the beach. All of Abita Luxury Resorts vacation rentals include complimentary snorkel gear, so take advantage of the opportunity to view a variety of tropical fish.
49 Black Sand Beach is not just a beautiful location for a day at the beach but also a rare geological wonder, making it a must-visit for anyone exploring the Big Island's diverse natural landscapes
Access - 49 Black Sand Beach is located in a gated community, however the beach is open to the public. Advise the gate attendants you are headed to the black sand beach and they will allow you through. The parking lot does fill up so arrive early! If you are staying in one of Abita Luxury Rentals Nohea at Mauna Lani homes, use one of the complimentary bikes to access the beach and skip any full lots.
